## Growing Bodies Have Load Limits Too

We recently wrote about tissue load and capacity in the context of an adult injury — a hip flaring up after a big, unfamiliar day of physical demand more than a year post-surgery. The same framework applies directly to kids returning to sport, whether they're coming back from an ankle sprain, a growth-related pain like Osgood-Schlatter, a fracture, or just a long off-season.

The core idea doesn't change with age: tissue can only absorb so much load before it needs time to adapt. What changes with kids is that their tissue — bone, growth plates, tendon, ligament — is actively developing, which makes the load-versus-capacity gap even more important to manage well.

## A Quick Refresher: Load, Capacity, and Demand

Every tissue in the body has a current capacity — the amount of stress it can handle repeatedly without breaking down. Sport, practice, and daily activity all place demand on that tissue. When demand consistently stays within capacity, tissue adapts and gets stronger. When demand spikes well above capacity — especially suddenly — tissue gets irritated, and injury risk goes up.

For kids, a few factors make this balance trickier to manage than in adults:

- Growth spurts change the equation overnight. Bone often grows faster than the surrounding muscle-tendon unit can lengthen, temporarily reducing flexibility and increasing tissue tension around joints — a big reason growth-related pain clusters around growth spurts.

- Training load often jumps in big, uneven steps. A season starting after a slow summer, a tournament weekend after weeks of light training, or jumping from one sport's off-season straight into another sport's in-season are all classic capacity-demand mismatches.

- Kids are less likely to self-report early warning signs. Adults tend to notice and mention nagging soreness; kids often play through it until it becomes pain that limits function, because they don't yet have the frame of reference to flag it early — or don't want to sit out.

- Multi-sport and single-sport specialization both carry load considerations. Specialization concentrates repetitive stress on the same tissues year-round; multi-sport participation spreads load out but can still add up to a heavy total volume across seasons without anyone tracking it as one number.

## What This Means for Return to Sport After Injury

Whether the injury was a sprain, a fracture, a growth-plate issue, or overuse pain, returning to sport well means asking the same underlying question as in adult rehab: has capacity been rebuilt to match the demand the sport is about to place on this tissue?

A few evidence-informed principles guide this:

1. "Pain-free" and "ready" are not the same thing. A joint or muscle can feel fine at rest or even during light activity while still lacking the capacity for a full practice, a game, or repeated high-intensity efforts. Return-to-sport protocols exist specifically because static pain-free status doesn't predict how tissue will respond under sport-specific load.

2. Progressive loading beats an all-or-nothing return. Stepwise return-to-play frameworks — building from light individual training, to non-contact team training, to full contact, to full competition — exist to close the capacity gap gradually rather than asking healing tissue to handle full sport demand in one jump.

3. A missed step often shows up as a setback, not a straight line. Just like the adult hip flare-up example, a step back in a return-to-sport plan usually reflects a load spike the tissue wasn't ready for yet — not a re-injury from scratch, and not a reason to panic. It's information about where the current capacity ceiling sits.

4. Total load matters, not just the injured area. Sleep, growth, school stress, and training volume in other sports all affect a young athlete's overall capacity to handle physical demand. A young athlete who is sleep-deprived or stacking three sports at once has less "buffer" for the same training load.

## Practical Guidance for Parents and Coaches

- Track total weekly load across all activities , not just the primary sport — practices, games, PE class, and pickup games all count toward cumulative demand.

- Ramp training volume gradually after any time off — illness, injury, off-season, or a break longer than a week or two all reduce capacity somewhat, even without an official "injury."

- Take early complaints seriously, even mild ones. A young athlete mentioning soreness that doesn't fully resolve between sessions is often an early, useful signal — not something to wait out.

- Follow a graded return-to-play plan after any injury , rather than "cleared, so back to everything." Building back toward full training load and full-contact play in stages gives tissue time to catch up to demand.

- Loop in a healthcare provider for anything beyond mild, short-lived soreness — persistent pain, swelling, pain that changes how a child moves, or pain around a growth plate all warrant an assessment before pushing through.

## The Bottom Line

Kids' bodies follow the same tissue-load principles as adults' — they just have less margin for error, because those tissues are actively growing and kids aren't always equipped to flag problems early. A smart return to sport isn't about waiting for zero pain and diving back in; it's about rebuilding capacity in steps that match what the sport is going to demand.
